Education is one of the key developmental challenges around the world, especially in developing regions. Research done in rural areas in India showed that the quality of education is low [6]. This is similar to a lot of developing regions around the world, especially in Africa. One of the major problems in such areas is the fact that most schools do not have the proper infrastructure in place [6]. Furthermore, the teachers receive a low income which does not motivate them [6]. This could be due to the fact that a number of the teachers are not skilled enough which is another problem on its own. This low quality of education runs through all the main levels i.e. primary, secondary and tertiary education. In South Africa, the quality for a lot of black students is poor with the effects of apartheid still being felt. In developed countries such as the United States, the quality of education is much higher and adheres to the standards set by regulatory bodies such as the British Computer Society among others. However, the system is not perfect and contains problems of its own. In 2008, the graduating medical students set a record for educational debt in the United States [7]. There are no signs of this problem going away and graduates this year are expected to set a new record [8]. The rest of this essay is going to focus on the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as well as Information Retrieval (IR) in education, especially in developing regions.
