Why Compulsory Education Laws Should Be Changed. Should compulsory education laws in the U.S. be abolished? Education in the U.S. is a controversial subject. Many argue that the system is broken. Others argue for abolishing the compulsory education laws. However, compulsory education laws in the U.S. should not be abolished, but should be changed. According to Education.govt.nz “If a child is under 17 years old he must go to school every day. Under the Education Act of 1989, parents or guardians of children between 6 and 16 years old can be prosecuted if their child is away from school without a good reason.” Once a child has turned 17, he has already come so close to graduation is would be pointless to not graduate high school. Society is based on education because it brings economic and social wealth. High school is a way for all to be equal. All have the equal opportunity, but it is up to each to succeed in school. High school is one of the first big accomplishments in life, if one graduates. High school also teaches ways to expand career options and knowledge. Leon Botstein New York Times writer said, “The American high school is obsolete and should be abolished” (254). It shouldn’t be abolished but changed. A 17 year old can drop out and that is wrong, because it would make him not become a fully educated man. Teachers with higher degrees should teach higher grade students. Their also should be more time for, one on one learning, and teacher to student learning. Ways to change the system. Schools need to hire more teachers. Schools could also work around student’s schedules for individual learning. Also no student should never be able to drop out. These ways would benefit the system. Nelson Mandela President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999 once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.These are ways for student to for compulsory to be changed, but still
