Today, January 28, 2016 I attended the “Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 29th March for Humanity”. This ethnic cultural event was located in the Ceddia Union Building where there were at least 100 students, facility, staff and guest attended. As March for Humanity started around 3:40pm, Jahkai Homes started the event off by singing the Star Spangled Banner; then Simeon Ray sung “Lift Every Voice”. After that, Harmonic Voices of Truth sung, Anthony Brown “Worth” Then President Harpster, introduced a quote from Dr. King himself, “What are we doing for other”? Next the keynote speaker, Mark Kelly Tyler presented his speech. Tyler spoke on the importance of what happened in the past, which is reoccurring in today’s society. The theme of Tyler’s speech was Selma to Ferguson: Then and Now. When African Americans were marching for equal voting rights in Selma young people were among the crowd wanting equal rights and currently young people are marching in Ferguson, for equal justice for young Michael Brown. As this course description says “human behavior in the social environment lens approach calls for students to examine their own cultural roots and learn about other cultures and expose the role of history present day diversity issues”, we need to understand that we have the same similar issue reoccurring today. The practice behavior is understanding the forms and mechanisms of oppression and discrimination. In the past, minorities have fought for equal rights to vote and have the same opportunities as their peers. 50 years, has gone by and we are still fighting to end discrimination based on the color of our skin, women’s pay rate is still less than what a male makes. This event connects to oppression and discrimination because we are still fighting to end oppression and discrimination. Women are still looked at as incompetent to do the same task as male would do. In “Unequal Protection: Why Gender Equality Depends on Discrimination”, it was stated that, “Women still lag far behind men in earnings, wealth, and social power. Even though women have enjoyed formal equality under the law for decades—a central goal of sameness feminism—the glass ceiling remains stubbornly difficult to break” (Cunningham-Parmeter, p. 3). I understand that it is hard to break stereotypes and the values we have grew up on but we need to give women a chance and try to create a new understanding and end discrimination against women in the work
