This is a case of a surrogate mother who refused to give up her child after birth. This woman, Mary Whitehead, signed a contract with William Stern, whose sperm was to be used in conceiving the baby, which state that after birth she would have to surrender the baby to him. The contract stated that after the process of pregnancy was complete, the mother of the child would receive up to $10,000. The wife of William Stern would adopt the baby and become her mother. After giving birth to a baby girl, Mary Whitehead claimed that she created a bond with the baby during pregnancy and stated that she could not live without her. Therefore, the Sterns allowed her to keep the baby for one week, however, she ended up running away with her to Florida. When the Sterns found out where she had taken the baby, they took the the matter to court. The court ended up deciding that since there was a contract involved in this case, they awarded the child to the Sterns with visiting rights to Ms
