In Defense Of Abortion Essay

In today’s societies around the world, there is currently two factions of the highly controversial topic of abortion and whether it should be allowed or outlawed. These two factions on opposite sides are pro-choice and pro-life. Pro-choice supporters in essence believes a woman has the right to an abortion if she decides to do so. On the other hand, pro-life supporters believe the fetus is its own human being and has the right to live, thus an abortion cannot be performed on the woman. Judith Jarvis Thomson, a philosophy professor supports the right to an abortion in her paper, “A defense of Abortion” (186). In this paper, she uses examples to try to explain why abortion is not an immoral act as she treats the fetus as an invader to the woman’s body. Some people however do not agree with Thomson’s depiction of how she defended why abortion should be allowed. For example, most women in general did not want the baby to begin with. Like I had said, they took precautions by using some form of birth control in order to have a high chance of not getting pregnant. Even with the use of some form of birth control, they are sometimes defective and the woman may still end up pregnant. As to the objection that abortion is killing and thus morally wrong, I say that not all killings are morally wrong. For example, self-defense is justifiable as a means to defend yourself (191).
