A New Era in Late-Night TV with Stephen Colbert --Responsibility and Influence of Mass Media
Nowadays, there are so many people can not sleep regularly, so it emerges various late-night TV shows. And the one of the most popular late-night TV show, called The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Stephen Colbert, who is an extreme right-wing blowhard celebrity, would like to give his own voice in public. However, in Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he sheds his political persona and interviews the guests with his true feelings instead of being a puppet and doing the routines as he is told. Political culture is a source for the legitimization of politics which contains the public’s attitudes to, emotions and beliefs of the political system, its evolvement and its enactment. It is invisible in regulating and stabilizing society. Molding political culture is a process of politics becoming socialized. Family, schools, social groups and mass media are the main means for the politics to become socialized. Mass media’s function of influencing political culture overwhelms its other functions. Mass covers the whole society and the individuals whole life. Therefore, politician believe that in modern society, parties can not act as leading role in forming or molding political culture. However, other systems like mass media can decide individuals’ political attitudes and beliefs. During the process, mass media gives out massive political information and regulates people’s cognition, assessment and emotion on politics. It influences and even decides their political values and beliefs. Since individuals opinions come from life experience. Their life experience associates with concrete and specific incidents. Mass media attract the public’s attention by covering the activities, speeches and even ideologies. Therefore, the public’s attention is enforced by the “education” of the mass media and their actions are channeled to the almost same direction. Although people in power try to control mass media and make it work for themselves. Mass media can always break through the limitations and restrictions and achieves incredible effects. Stephen Colbert, with his team in Late Night, can sometimes overturn viewers’ ideas about current issues and break the restrictions the power they to enforce in him or his team. Mass media has much space for the multi-politics to develop. Society will thus develop toward a direction where multi-culture will be prosperous and individuals will benefit from the tolerable
