Police brutality is a form of police misconduct that involves excessive force taken by an officer of the law. Occurring in many cities in poverty, police brutality has become more and more apparent. Communities of color have been the victims to police brutality. Recently in the Bay Area, many peaceful and violent disturbances have been occurring. Riots and protests, have been present within San Francisco and Oakland. A large fault is placed on the guardians of the law. Brotherhood, or police alliance, places a white sheet over the true cause of excessive force and misconduct. Another fault goes to the Justice Department for failing to convict fellow guardians of the law for police brutality in a wide range of cases (Walter). According to the SF Examiner, “At this moment in San Francisco, truth telling (about police brutality) might involve our having the backs of young people of color who bravely come forward with their stories of police abuse. It might also mean supporting courageous officers who break their code of silence to tell what they know from within the Department” (Smith). Getting to the bottom of police brutality involves everyone coming together and speaking up against the injustices occurring within our community. Gangs are a group of people within an organization. Often times, partaking in criminal acts and riots. Many younger generations are afflicted with gangs. People are joining gangs to fill avoid or to feel a sense of belonging. Specifically, people of color are joining gangs to have an alliance. So someone has their back when Law Enforcement turns theirs. According to Found SF, “Most San Franciscans are unaware of the decades-old gang culture that still exists today, nor do they know about the political nuances that everyday youth still experience to this day.
