I’ve been given an assignment in english where I have to select two or three poems and analysis them. I’ve been searching poems for about a week and there are two particular poems stood out to me. These poems are ‘How do I love thee?’ by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and ‘Annabel Lee’ by Edgar Allan Poe. I chose these poems as they stood out from the crowd and caught my attention. It was the love that drew me in and the tragedy that captured me.
The first stanza of the poem begins like a fairy tale, as it begins with ‘It was many and many a year ago, / In a kingdom by the sea.’ Many fairytales start out with ‘Once upon a time, in a kingdom far away.’ The speaker introduces the title character in the third line, calling her a ‘maiden.’ …show more content…
Their love was so strong that even the angels in heaven noticed their love.
The third stanza is where it takes a turn for the worse. The speaker is blaming the angels for the death of Annabel Lee as he believes they were jealous of the love they shared together.
The ending of the poem changes the feeling of the poem from a beautiful fairytale to something a bit more creepy. That is caused by the speaker telling us that because they can’t be separated by death, he spends his nights by Annabel’s dead body.
The whole fairytale feel to the start of the poem drew me in since I love anything to do with love and fairytales. The concept of loving someone even after death is kind of inspiring to me. I like how at first it felt like a fairytale to something dark and creepy.
