'Annabel Lee' was the last lyric Edgar Allan Poe composed before his passing in 1849. He sold the rights to it while he was still alive, however it was not distributed until after his demise. Death is a definite end to a mortal relationship, but an infinite love can remain. Poe’s narrator says, “Of my darling- my darling- my wife and bride” (6). This is very confusing since Annabel Lee passed away when she was only but a child. Because he says this, one must assume that they either married while she was still living or that he came back later and married her corpse.…

She is the reason that Poe has wrote the poem and is the main focus of the whole poem. Poe never really gives us any details about Annabel Lee herself; she doesn’t talk and we don’t really know what she looks like so this allows the reader to characterize Annabel Lee however they see fit. Also, this could be the poet’s way of showing that she is perfect in his eyes and is made of pure beauty. Annabel Lee is first mentioned in line 4 when the poet refers to her as a “maiden,” which almost makes her sound like fairy tale character. He mentions Annabel Lee again in lines 25-26 saying.…

Annabel Lee is taken from the narrator by her highborn kinsman. It does not state how she died, but one can conclude that it was very sudden and the narrator was grieving very much. This relates to Poe’s life, because when Virginia had passed away, he was in a very poor stage with alcohol and wasted all of his money. It says in the poem: The angles not so happy in Heaven, went envying her and me- Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know, in this kingdom by the sea) That the wind came out of the cloud by night, Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.…
