In the first couple of pages of chapter 2 of California a History Starr illustrated how the Europeans were obsessed with finding an easier route to Asia and India. With the explorations gone “wrong” dating back to Columbus setting sail in 1492, then Magellan setting sailing to South America in 1519, and then Cortes sailing to Mexico also in 1519. Thus, Tijuana and other border towns along the southwest quickly adopted these industries. Prior to 1913, Tijuana primarily had a ranching and agricultural economy. The land largely consisted of the Argüello family rancho named “Tia Juana.”…

Riordan and Rundel (2014) state, California contains “nearly 20% of the world’s vascular plant species, these regions are global biodiversity hotspots” and are a major part of reversing air pollution. Due to a higher demand in agricultural products, farmers and companies have expanded and opened up more land to develop and farm. Again Riordan and Rundel add that agricultural land poses a more immediate threat to the biodiversity than climate change does because of the destruction of native species. Their article continues to question if the mass expansion is driven by the uprising of towns and cities that drive farmers out of…
