California’s Mediterranean climate is at risk, along with a few precious plants that only grow in the Golden State. Riordan and Rundel (2014) state, California contains “nearly 20% of the world’s vascular plant species, these regions are global biodiversity hotspots” and are a major part of reversing air pollution. Due to a higher demand in agricultural products, farmers and companies have expanded and opened up more land to develop and farm. Again Riordan and Rundel add that agricultural land poses a more immediate threat to the biodiversity than climate change does because of the destruction of native species.
