Despite bearing some minor similarities, the differences between Fry’s childhood and mine in regard to our relationship with our parents, siblings, and the way we explored our own childhood are distinct.
Parents bear a great influence on their kids as they grow up. Fry is how he is today because of how his parents raised him. Let’s start with Fry’s mother. She was a very enthusiastic sports watcher and not the best mother. Mrs. Fry often deserted her sons in favor of watching a football game, or playing indoor golf and acting unworried with her son’s activities and whereabouts. When she gave birth to Fry, her attention was more towards the outcome of a baseball game she was listening to on a radio than her own contractions. He was a military man and veteran of the Vietnam War. Mr. Fry had paranoia about “Commies” and “Y2K”. During the episode “Cold Warriors”, Fry has many flashbacks of his father during an ice-fishing trip and a science fair project. Fry’s father was quite harsh on him, always giving him knuckleheads, and fighting with him, but later on in the show it reveals that he was only doing that because he wanted to make Fry stronger. Fry’s childhood became harsh and difficult once his father put so much pressure on him to be strong and a man. Both of Fry’s parents had their quirks but at the end both of them really did care and love for him. Because of their distant relationship with Fry, Fry became very independent as an adult, even though he was still pretty dumb.
