Varian Fry: A Lack Of Hope

Varian Fry was a spark of hope for people in a time of Holocaust. He had to work really hard to get his work done, so much he got little sleep. "I still begin at 8 in the morning and work until 11 at night, and sometimes until one (Leepson).” Varian Fry was a man who stood up for the Jews where many other people did not at a time of the Holocaust.
Varian Fry was born on the 15th of October on West 150th Street in Manhattan. His mother, Lillian, for a while, was in the hospital for emotional problems. When she was home, she would read to Varian when he was sick or pretending to be. His father, Arthur, worked as a stockbroker and was rarely home. He was mainly raised by his two aunts, Laura and Florence.

To make documents to leave, they needed to be done fast. One has to make two documents per a person. If one of the documents expires before the other is complete, then you would have to restart. Many of the ones he made where illegal.
The AFGF, the American Friends of German Freedom gave $3,000. Mary J. Gold gave some money to help out. He had a few trusted people for assist. People like Daniel Benedite and Jean Gemahling to help him. Varian Fry even got gangsters, forgers, and black-marketers. They helped by “when hiding places had to be found, money charged at black-market rates, documents forged, officials bribed, people smuggled”.
Varian had chances of being arrested while being in France. $3,000 was not nearly enough to start the plan. He had to help British soldiers with some money problems. Eileen died at 1948. He had to be sent backed to the USA because someone caught him. He was able to save 2000 people, which was 10 times his original goal. He did not get much credit for what he did in his lifetime

Before his death, he was working on a book that his children had to finish. He was having emotion problems during the time. He also was experiencing dizziness and headaches.
