Wang Li loves to party, and so he intends to use his money to have a good time until he is 30 years old. He then intends to get serious about planning for his future by making personal contributions into a superannuation fund. The Central States Pension Fund has been faced with a major ethical issue in recent years. Due to the economic downturn in 2008, the Fund has lost a considerable amount of money, which effects the pensioners using this fund. You forecast that they will need, each year in retirement, an annual income with the same purchasing power as $60,000 has today, i.e., their retirement income must keep up with inflation. There is currently a 1.5% annual price inflation rate that is expected to continue indefinitely. (I.e., their first withdrawal from their retirement account must account for the annual price inflation during the 16 years between now and the first retirement withdrawal. By using the compound interest formula one can conclude that if the LTC center accepted Mr. Richman’s gift now and invested it in a savings account with a 14% annual compounded interest rate, the LTC center would have a total of $481,790 after 12 years. If the LTC center deferred accepting the gift now and instead chose to accept the $300,000 upon Mr. Richman’s death, they would need to invest the money for 6.27 years in order to earn the same amount. Therefore, it is fair to say that although the LTC center will have to wait until Mr. Richman’s unfortunate demise to receive the gift, they could earn interest about twice as with the larger gift. Healthcare reform has lead to extensive cutbacks in reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid, and private…
