Introduction
Is there a particular way of management that is not only profitable for a company but also practical? There are many options available for companies to pick and/or chose with some even developing their own. In terms of philosophers of management four stand out from the rest- Peter Drucker, with his thoughts of managing by objective, Edward Deming promoting total quality management, Mary Follett theory focusing more on conflict resolution and the power within an organization, and last but not least Fredrick Taylor, the man whose sole focus followed along the lines of scientific management but in an employee aspect. Deming proposed a total quality management as well as fourteen point system as a guideline to proper management. His thought process followed along the lines the motivations of an employee. His controversy thought that quotas in essences where bad, such that employees where focus on “quantity the expense of quality,” (Carson, 2016). Employees had a number that they had to reach and were willing to sacrifice the all other aspects in order to meet the quota, and in turn only doing what management was telling them to do-meet the quota. One of the main purpose that a company has is to make a profit; however, if a company has the option to sell good quality items versus a large amount of lower quality, it can make them stand out from their competition in the market. This theory hypothesis was that of increasing worker motivation- the incentive being pay in this case, would have a reaction in the form of higher productivity which would then onto higher profits. A key component to this management style was that Taylor broke down task into smaller compartments and timed each step in the process. This allowed for him to reduce “wasted time and/or other inefficiencies” (Taylor, 2016). Some solutions to which he proposed to solve said bottlenecks included better equipment, training, and so forth.
Conclusion
While all four management experts have excellent thoughts and theories on management, companies need to figure out what will work the best or have the best fit for their culture. They should try to play to their strengths and minimize the weakness presented. There are main options readily available for them to model after such as the ones presented by Peter Drucker, Edward Deming, Mary Follett, and Fredrick
