Faced with constant financial oppression from Great Britain and an apathetic hierarchy, 16th Century Ireland found itself in a dilemma that would dwindle its already weakened state. Essayist Jonathan Swift, in his appalling, yet rational “Modest Proposal” presents a solution to the country’s economic crisis by selling the children of impoverished households to the wealthy as a form of sustainable sustenance. Through the use of hyperbole and irony, Swift, in a highly sardonic tone, reveals the absurdity of England’s oppression on Ireland’s economy while also exposing the callousness of the wealthy upper class. While the entire piece itself was widely hyperbolic, Swift emphasizes the satirical device in order to display his irritance with Ireland’s…
Thank you for your generous consideration. I greatly appreciate you passing my idea along to the Parks and Recreation commission. As for the issue regarding space in my plan, along with a friend I have already thought of methods to incorporate volleyball courts into any of the public parks that have existing basketball courts. This method has already been used at the Reggie Wong Memorial park in Chinatown; there are lines for a volleyball court painted over the lines for the basketball courts, thus conserving space and maximizing recreational capabilities. A volleyball court is only slightly smaller than a basketball court in size, meaning a volleyball court can actually fit inside of a basketball court.…
Johnathan Swift was born on November 30, 1667 in Dublin, Ireland. At the time of his birth, Swift mother was poor. She could not provide for baby Swift, she wanted Swift to have a chance at a better life, so this resulted in him getting sent away to live with his wealthy uncle who paid for his education. He graduated from Trinity College with a bachelor’s degree. When Swift became older, he moved to England, however, later Swift decided to go back to Ireland.…
Swift wrote “A Modest Proposal” to suggest essentially that farming babies was the way to battle famine. While this is more or less a joke, the article addressed that beggars with children that they raise to be beggars are a burden on society. The real question is how do we fix this problem. Swift wants any opposing arguments to have a solution as to, “how they will be able to find food and raiment for a hundred thousand useless mouths and backs.” This statement brings up the main point I found in this paper, why are the poor having children they can't afford?…
According to the text “metadiscourse is language that does not refer to the substance of your writing, but instead it refers to yourself, your reader or your writings”. This sentence is an example of metadiscourse. 1a. My attempt to explain to my readers what metadiscourse is particularly difficult, because I do not fully understand it myself. This sentence refers to the reader and myself is a prime example of metadiscourse.…
Jonathan Swift’s A Modest Proposal certainly carries a very strong impact and is a powerful piece of writing that can leave an audience stunned. It is a satirical narrative, about overpopulation and famines in Ireland, and Swift’s opinion on what can be done to solve it. The “proposal” he had in mind was that people simply fatten up and eat the children, because he believes that they serve no purpose and in actuality are merely contributing to the complication at hand. Swift also uses statistical data that helps advance the idea that his proposal would actually work, making propositions such as “I do therefore humbly offer it to public consideration that of the 120,000 already computed, 20,000 may be reserved for breed, whereof only one-fourth…
In 1729 in Ireland during a time of economic struggles a man named Jonathan Swift wrote and essay entitled “A Modest Proposal.” This essay he wrote told the solution for Ireland to gain money and stopping any famine is simple for all we most do is eat the overpopulation of children on the land. He goes on to say that poor beggar children will be easily fatten up and brought to the butcher to be properly cut to be sold to Ireland's rich and hungry. Bring down both the unemployment rate and the overpopulation in Ireland. Quite a modest proposal indeed, yet it is funny to know that is this is all satirical.…
The poverty of Ireland, raised attention for the author to take action in the process of families selling their children. Not only will this be a better life for the family but it will help improve the existing penury. Just like the poor wins so do the rich. Although the child will be sold away to work, the family will however receive income, and the wealthy will gain a new a member to work for them. This will also benefit the mothers with the ability to work instead of nourishing.…
The Modest Proposal is a rather interesting piece of work by Swift, which he wrote in 1729, and is a famous work of the satire genre. In this short story, Swift is addressing the great famine that is threatening the people of Ireland, due to English landlords taking away too much money away from the Irish people, which in turn takes away funds to buy food. Swift is one of the few who want to stand up and and tell the people of Ireland to rise against their landlords. But knowing his fellow Irish country people who indeed won’t listen to his problem solving idea of revolting against the English, then disguises his plan, with a sarcastic and an overexaggerated plot. Since people are starving and Swift sees that there is a overpopulation with…
1. One key concept from The Goal by Eliyahu M. Goldratt was the Theory of Constraints. This theory stipulates that every firm has at least one factor or constraint that prevents them from achieving their goal – which is typically profit. The main constraints plaguing Alex Rogo’s factory were the bottlenecks. In this novel, Mr. Goldratt lists his five recommended steps for managing constraints.…
When you first take a look at The Rape of the Lock, and A Modest Proposal, they seem like wildly different pieces of writing. In one, a person presents a proposal to fix the poverty issue in Ireland by eating children. The other tells a story of a superficial woman who makes a big fit about getting her hair stolen. But while Rape of the Lock and A Modest Proposal are two very different pieces of writing thematically, they share a lot of the same propaganda and humor techniques that were a hallmark of satirical writing during the Enlightenment. These techniques occur everywhere in both pieces of writing, and there are several that they share in common.…

In his paper, "A Modest Proposal," writer Jonathan Swift uses as a to a great degree foolish guidance issues the sound of his heart, his "advice" is brimming with incongruity abilities which are cover and incongruity. In the first place, keeping in mind the end goal to accomplish the effect of camouflage, Swift does not immediate give his "advice", rather, he extravagantly makes a persuading and legitimate "adviser" who looks like quiet. Be that as it may, this "adviser" need to get the reader 's heart in their immaterial cognizance, and lure them to expect an astute and effective answer for take care of the issue of Ireland. Second, after his amazing words, he additionally needs to keep a genuine mentality to let the "adviser" rendering the absurd hypothesis. By raising public concern, he brings sensible impression toward the start of his essay, then he step by step makes it exceptionally…
