Personal Narrative: Moving To Virginia

Improved Essays
Last year, when I moved to Virginia, it was like a kick into reality. I was forced to move away from friends that were like family, and get use to another place that I would soon have to call home. Usually I would have been quick to try and make new friends, but it was different this time around. Instead I spent a lot of time being quiet and alone, which eventually lead to me getting to know myself.
From being alone, I learned to love my own company. I start doing things like reading books and educating myself with things I never knew existed. I listened to all kinds of new music, and my favorite new singer became SZA. Furthermore, I became interested in looking at art, and trying to see it to see as something more than just faces and shapes.

Growing up, my family and I weren’t very religious by any means. My parents grew up in Catholic families, but when they moved away from their families, they moved away from God too. Every time we were stationed in a new place, my parents always blamed not going to church on the military and how we would always be moving. My sister and I didn’t mind this, because we didn’t really know what church was, and didn’t understand the meaning of it, but when we moved to Louisiana in 2012, I met a friend that would change this. I met this girl Samantha, who seemed to be in a few of my classes.…

When I was 16 I moved to from California to Texas. During this time, I assume everyone in Texas wears a cowboy hat, boots, talks in a southern accent such as saying y’all and other such stereotypes. I assume the general understanding of Texas from what I was taught as a kid in movies, music, and shows. Once I moved to Texas that that type of thought was used against me, my classmates assume I probably l go to the beach and surf and have met plenty of celebrities when I lived in California. This is an example of REPRESENTATIVENESS HEURISTIC to judge or presume a someone or something relying on past experiences and mental representations to a new situation creating a particular group.…

The day I moved to Georgia, we had been living in Texas for five years when my mom said we were moving to Georgia. I graduated my senior year from high school I thought she was lying, but she said that the VA center down in Texas was awful, and she didn’t like it there anyways, but she really wanted a better VA system. Then we started packing every month putting stuff in storage, and having to do open houses every other week, we had to clean, vacuum and take our pets with us every time we left the house until our house finally sold. Then we started looking at houses In Grovetown, also for a good school system then we waited 3 weeks for a house because we were looking at spots with upstairs and down stairs, a big backyard for or dogs, also a school…

One cold and dreary day in January, I got home from an uneventful day at school. I never would have guessed what was about to happen or thought that this would ever happen to me. Moving here from North Carolina when I was four changed my life completely, I was away from my family who I lived with my whole life, thrown into a school with a bunch of kids who lived here since they were born and told to “make friends.” This changed the next 13 years of my life to something I can never picture not having. The first four years, both my parents had full time jobs and my grandma helped raise me a lot, she taught me so many manners and how to behave, she even ended up living across the street from me for 2 of those years, they were rough for my parents, new baby, just moving, having to find jobs, making friends, and getting food on the table for me. Living in Olathe, Kansas, a large suburb outside of Kansas City, did not prepare me for the move to Salina. The benefits of living in a larger suburb are that the high schools can really help you prepare for the transition to college level classes. My senior year was when everything clicked into place and I knew what I want to do with my life, and that was flying.…
