Personal Narrative Essay: The Conversation Between Suicide And Bullying

Decent Essays
On Wednesday, March 28th we had a speaker come on, his name was Mr Halligan. He talked to us about suicide and bullying. October 7th, 2004 at 6am in the morning his son Ryan Halligan had committed suicide from depression and bullies. His son Ryan was at the age of 2 and could not speak yet, most 2 year olds can speak at that age but he couldn’t, he had a speaking disability. When Ryan had reached 5th grade the bullying started to happen. When Ryan received a bad grade his “friends” decided to pick on him for that. His “friends” also made fun of his speaking disability as well. Ryan couldn’t pronounce certain words and he stuttered a lot and his “friends” thought it was ok to make fun of him about that. Which in my opinion is so wrong of them. No one shoukd make fun of anyone for any matter because no one deserves that. …show more content…
I mean it’s not the best when someone calls its sped class because it makes you feel sped. When they said “oh my god you’re the stupidest person I know, you’re so sped.” That made me feel like absolute crap like no I did not show emotion, some days I let it slide but other days I actually said something to them, which to me takes courage to stand up for yourself and for what you think is right. In my opinion I’m not stupid I’m not dumb I mean not any of this I may have this days where I get bad grades or I have bad attitude about school but in reality I actually do try and for the people who do not see that really should. But what I’m trying to say is that it is SO IMPORTANT to stand up for yourself and show them how much it means to you when someone calls you those hurtful things, because you are better than

In recent years bullies have found new tools because of the Internet. In the fictional movie Mean Girls the characters make up a burn-book where they write awful things in it about other classmates and pass it around the school as a way to bully and humiliate their peer. The modern-day version of this is the “burn page” made through Facebook on the Internet. In this iteration students make a Facebook page that other classmates join to disparage a peer.…

“You won’t amount to anything…you’re too small…you can compete with us”. For my whole life I have been hearing those words from my peers to adults, coaches and the list goes on. During my school career it was a breeze until I got to middle school. Once I hit the sixth grade the name calling and constant judging from the seventh and eighth graders started. However, what really struck me with disbelief was how my “friends” started to treat me, as if joining in on the banter was “cool” and did it to fit in with the older/cooler kids.…

Why, in the end does suicide seem like a losing battle? Why is it so hard to see the destruction it leaves behind and the hurt along with it? For many nights I asked myself this question, shortly after my Grandpa (Adoptive Dad) Ed ended his life in suicide. It was very hard to overcome and sometimes I didn’t think I could come out of it. Suicide doesn’t just affect you personally, it also makes your life very different.…

As acclaimed author Mary Roach once said, “I don 't fear death so much as I fear it 's prologues: loneliness, decrepitude, pain, debilitation, depression, senility. After a few years of those, I imagine death presents like a holiday at the beach” (Roach). For me the validity of this quote is unwavering. I was personally impacted by the sadistic daily inconsistencies and emotional toying brought about by a dark ravenging depression brought about by bullying and the ever impending divorce of my parents that would adventually leave me a hollowed out shell of who I previously was. My heart black, my soul empty, and my mind a barren wasteland consumed by darkness.…

Suicide is a really serious problem that impacts everyone, even the youth. “Suicide is the third leading cause of death for people between the ages of ten and twenty four “(Ashford). It results in approximately four thousand six hundred deaths each year, but even though mental health administrators suggested widespread screening for suicides and mental illness for students in 2003 (Freidman), “only less than two percent of schools have a mental health screening program” (Briggs). All schools should offer mental health screenings for its students as it can help professionals and parents in the early identification of teens at risk for depression and suicidal impulses because unless there is more awareness and prevention, suicide will carry on to take the lives of the young. All schools are in a significant position to…
