Bullying at school and on social media happens more than people realize, causing emotional damage to the victim. Bullying can cause fatal situations. Not only does this hurt the person emotionally, it can cause them to develop depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts. Many reports of suicide through discrimination this way have been reported in the past years. One report was a man being recorded with another man, and he had no clue about it. It was posted online and the bullying started, and it went on until he couldn’t take it anymore. I know someone personally who faces bullying to the point where they have self harmed, developed depression and self hate, and sometimes not attending school because they do not want to deal with it. These people hurt like any other person does. Many people do not care for hate crimes in this spectrum because their parents raised them that way, or their religion tells them otherwise. Many people that go to my school have made remarks on the religion subject, along with adults I’ve been around. It usually comes down to “I don’t agree with it.” Or, “I feel it’s gross and abnormal, so I wanna get rid of it.”, but the situation doesn’t ever affect them. Many of these people seem to forget that the person they hurt has family and friends and aspirations as well.
So many lives are harmed and so many lives are lost because of hate crimes. But people only seem to notice racial crimes, and not LGBT+ crimes, leaving them ignored. People need to put laws against LGBT+ hate crimes, helping victims feel safer, people more protected, and criminals serving time in jail. Sadly, many states do not have laws against this, but as caring people I know we can work to get that fixed. Take my introduction for example, all those are perfect examples for why it should be more noticed. People lose jobs, friends, emotional stability, and lives. Emotional damage is something we need to pay attention to in victims. Emotional damage can lead to them hurting themselves or committing suicide, damaging the people around them. Victims tend to feel alone and they feel like nobody cares or wants to help them. But as people around them we can show they aren’t alone and that we can make the mental abuse

Although studies show that public opinions on LGBT citizens have drastically improved over the years, this so-called ‘issue’ is still a sharply divided topic, especially with newer generations. That being said, an overwhelming ninety-two percent of LGBT students report hearing homophobic slurs on a daily basis. Transgenders face discrimination in many aspects of society in everyday life, law, and employment. There are many violent encounters faced by transgenders for example, in the past year “102 transgender people were murdered in 12 countries” simply because they were openly transgender (Machlitt). Transgenders also deal with wrongful incarceration; one of the biggest issues is being convicted for “manifesting” prostitution, which is if “somebody in public manifests an internet to commit or solicit an act of prostitution” (Machlitt). Laverne Cox once said that “[the ‘manifesting prostitution’ law] basically means that as a trans women of colour walking in a certain neighborhood, you can be arrested for prostitution.” However, the most prominent issues faced by transgenders is employment, “47 percent of transgender people report they were fired, not advanced, or not hired due to their gender identity” (Machlitt).…

Famous journalist, Hendrik Hertzberg, states, “Marriage should be between a spouse and a spouse, not a gender and a gender.” This quote speaks volumes because it makes it clear to people that marriage should not be affected on what gender you are, but should just depend on two people who love each other. Gay marriage has been a controversial topic ever since the LGBT community confronted society about their rights as an individual. Even though same-sex marriage was officially made legal across all 50 states since June 26, 2015, same- sex couples and rights activists have felt the discrimination they always have, if not worse (Steverman). Even though it is officially legal for same-sex couples to get married, not everyone agrees with this statement.…
