Make a Dream Come True
Wystan Hugh Auden, an Anglo-American poet, once said “A doctor, like anyone else who has to deal with human beings, each of them unique, cannot be a scientist; he is either, like the surgeon, a craftsman, or, like the physician and the psychologist, an artist. This means that in order to be a good doctor a man must also have a good character, that is to say, whatever weaknesses and foibles he may have, he must love his fellow human beings in the concrete and desire their good before their own.” Medicine is a field that has always aroused my interest and which I still find captivating. In fact, medicine would particularly allow me to satisfy my desire of helping and taking care of vulnerable people. According to the admission office of the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University, compassion, care, empathy, community involvement and social activism are non-academic criteria required to get into medicine. As a matter of fact, medicine is a true commitment to others and many medical specialties require human skills and altruism. According to a study made by Jean Decety, Karen E. Smith, Greg J. Norman, and Jodi Halpern and published in the World Psychiatry, empathy is a crucial component of quality health care. In fact, in the study, empathic communications are associated with increased patient satisfaction and better treatments. Furthermore, being an empathic physician increased the overall well-being of the doctors. Indeed, physicians can usually be qualified as bounteous and humane. Being empathetic also means taking wholeheartedly the welfare of the entire community. Finally, human contact absolutely needs to be a part of my future job. As the studying and working conditions of physician are a current debate in our society, it is crucial for me to be aware that medical school comprises serious risks of losing a balanced life. Indubitably, I have not taken such a meaningful life decision lightly. Although, after pondering, I still deeply believe that medicine is a career made for me and that if you are going to wake up every morning for work for the rest of your life, you better be passionate about
