Baby Blanket Research Paper

Comfort is a warmth we feel in our bones. It is a sense of security curious in nature. We find it in the arms of a loved one, between the sleeves of family photo albums, and in the cushions of our favorite shoes; or, in my case, in the stitches of my favorite blanket. It is amazing how we can find comfort in the simplest of things. I have had my baby blanket for so long it may as well have been another sibling. The origins of such a familiar fabric are still unknown and shrouded in mystery. My mother shifts through the possible stories like an erratic teen driver. “I think my friend Karen made it by hand for you. No, wait! Your dad’s friend got it overseas. Wait, no! Did we buy it for you?” I do not know where it’s from but it has always been by my side taking many forms, like a friend holding my hand when the bumps in the night got too loud or a napkin for the sniffles and stains that haunt all uncoordinated toddlers. When I got older it became my key to the past, a piece of my childhood I could hug and whisper secrets to. There were several moves and vacations over the years, each one requiring my baby blanket to be by my side. My dad eventually refers to me as Linus from the Peanuts, always touting my blanket over my shoulder or cradled in my arms. I bring it to every “show and tell” at school, not to mention any naptimes that were offered in preschool. Sleep-overs and camping excursions just weren’t the same without my blanket in tow.
