With the fire quickly approaching, they had no time to lose. The fire was 50 meters away. Jackson and Julia attempted to away as fast as they could, but it did not seem to be quick enough. It crept ever closer and closer, edging upon the gap between them. The fire was 25 meters away. The wind poured into the fire’s might, strengthening the speed of its burn and its heat. It seemed the two of them would be unable to escape from the fire’s wrath at this point. The fire was 15 meters away. Its rate of spread coupled with Jackson’s slow moving speed made it impossible to outrun the fire. “Push through the pain Jackson! If we don't make it, we are dead! All or nothing!” Julia shrieked.
“I don’t think I can! It’s too painful!” Jackson groaned.

They watched as the fire swiftly gobbled up everything in its wake, destroying all of the forest around them and turning it to ash. The fire continued to burn voraciously by moving farther into the forest, incinerating everything it touched completely. After it had passed and moved away farther along in the woods, the woods were desolate. Most of the trees were nothing but ashes, and the forest floor had disappeared into the fire. There were no rabbits, no deer, no grasshoppers, no fireflies, and none of anything else which lived in the forest only moments ago. The fire’s purpose may have been to stop them, but in actuality it succeeded in destroying everything else. Julia, realizing this, was deeply humbled by what else had fallen, even though they …show more content…
“Yes I can. I remember on that map it had a body of water shaped like this, and it was directly north of our house. On the map, it was pretty detailed about this lake, showing that it was bowling pin shaped, with the small part facing away from the house. So if we head that way,” Jackson explained, pointing to the larger end of the lake, “we should be able to make it home.”
“Thank goodness Jackson! Now that the sun is rising, we can head home safely and free ourselves from this nightmare!” Julia replied joyfully. Thus, with the fire raging off in the distance, but now just a nightmare of the past, Julia and Jackson trekked back to their house in accordance to Jackson’s memory of the map in their basement. With Jackson’s limp, they were slow-moving, giving them lots of time to ponder what had just occurred. “Jackson, with brutal honesty, I cannot believe what happened last night truly happened,” said Julia with a sense of wonder.
“Me neither. Can you pinch me to make sure I am not dreaming?” Jackson responded as Julia reached over to pinch him. “Ow! You didn’t have to do it that hard!” Jackson yelped.
“Gotta take my chances while I can! But truly, did that just really

The evergreen trees trapped under a pile of ashes, sweat, blood, guarded the aftermath of the winds, the fire, the storm, from them. It’s not easy to pick out what buildings were houses–that people once lived in–or where those thousands had gone. After a while, the excitement of the cameras and flashes faded into a wave of heat choking out the last bit of life, the thousands left to walk into the invisibility of the air. The strong, invincible forest, evaporated into its vulnerability. By this time, people had forgotten about the serenity that the trees once breathed out: disgusted by the uselessness of the uprooted stumps– pitifully clinging onto the earth.…

Nobody stops to think that they are being wasteful; that they are taking these things for granted. People seldom realize that the endless supply of food, water, electricity, and sunlight that they have grown used to could be taken at any moment. In the novel, This World We Live In, an asteroid hits the moon, pushing it closer to the Earth. A dark fog falls upon the world and the summer sky is a distant memory at best.…

The wind blew as the flame colored leaves fell from the tree and plummeted onto the ground. I could practically feel the seasons transitioning from summer to autumn as today happened to be known as "The Evil Haunted Shrub. " The evil haunted shrub was a name given to the forest that seemed to be one of the loneliest forest that still remained. Other than trees I considered it to be nearly empty, however the town considered it to be the deadliest forest around, especially the night before Halloween. I had always been quite interested in the mysterious aspects of life, so when I heard that tonight the forest would consist of such an evil, I had to scope it out.…

The Head of House had told her the Ash Hut was all locked up, on her very first day of school—but the Head of House had lied. Jana knew this because when she walked past the hut, she sometimes heard voices whispering in the wind that blew from between its cracked timber cladding. She knew this because she had ventured down to the hut one dark Friday evening and, beneath the pale glow of the darkening sky, swore she had seen a faint light pass between the thick boards nailed across its windows and slip through the gap beneath its crooked door. Jana had lost her nerve then and darted back to school in the purple twilight, hurrying so as not to miss lights out—or so she told herself.…
