J.D. goes through a lot obstacles growing up and his experiences made him the man he is today. Growing up in Middletown, Ohio wasn’t easy, it took a lot of courage to get through each day. As a child, J.D. was faced with the struggles of the Appalachian Americans and America’s work class. Middletown was a poor city in Ohio and not many people make it to college. J.D. J.D. didn’t like staying with his mother because he felt alone and isolated with nobody to talk to. Grit can be described as having a lot of courage or bravery. Growing up I was always shy and scared to speak my true feelings to others. I was always afraid of people not liking me and not being accepted by others. Whenever someone would harass or make fun of me, I would get upset and simply walk away from the situation. I couldn't stand when others would laugh and make fun of me. I used to come home from school and my Mom would ask, “how was school honey?” I would tell her the usual response, “It was good.” I was afraid to tell my mom that people are making fun of me. kay, so now we know about timshel, but it's also Adam's last word before he dies (at least it wasn't something totally random like rosebud). He says it right after Lee gets him to give Cal his blessing, i.e. show that he loves him as a son and free him from the guilt of "killing" his brother. It's a moment where things are at a crossroads for Cal: he could go on hating himself for what he has done and thinking that his dad died hating his guts, or he can be free and go on to break the Cain-Abel curse that seems to follow the Trask family around. As Lee says to Adam, "Give him his chance"…

Personal agency is a subject that is difficult to have an impartial or neutral position on, as it sparks a lot of controversy, due to its basis on the premise that those in the lower class are in their position by choice. J.D. Vance increasingly proves this statement through his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy”, with his focus on the Appalachian culture and their resistance to personal agency. Vance compellingly criticizes the lower class and specifically Appalachian culture and discusses that they are poor by their own choice and mindset through their learned helplessness and exploitation of the benefits that they are given as lower class citizens. Despite arguments over demographic privilege,Vance believes that his success is due to…

To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book showing how people can grow together. We have Scout and Jem growing up together in an innocent childhood growing into adulthood. We have Tom Robinson, an African American man who, is going to court with Atticus Finch (scouts father) and is trying to defend Tom against the harming white community. Tom Robinson was accused of rape of a white female Mayella. The raping of a white woman by a black man is similar to The Scottsboro Trial in 1933, where 9 black men were falsely accused of raping two white women.…

To Kill a Mockingbird - “Atticus said to Jem one day, “I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you'll go after birds. Shoot all the Bluejays you want, if you can hit 'em, but remember it's a sin to kill a mockingbird." This passage was a major part of the story because of the symbolism that has now been revealed. The Mockingbird is a harmless and pure hearted animal, which in this story symbolizes Boo Radley and Tom Robinson. I chose this passage because of the strong meaning behind it.…
