Health is something that everyone as an individual has a perception of. The World Health Organisation (W.H.O) state that “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity” (1946). Therefore, the W.H.O believe that to be healthy a person needs to be more than just free from illness. The positive health perception is also quite similar to what is cited by the W.H.O. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (2013) studied Positive Health and found external factors known as health assets can help accomplish long and healthy life. The emphasis of this model is to diagnose an illness by using an array of tests such as blood tests and X-rays. An intervention stage then follows this diagnoses, a Healthcare Professional then sets out a care plan to see what treatment can be given to remove the ill health, in the form of medication. The Social Model of health was developed through the W.H.O definition of what health is. The W.H.O clearly state that health is a combination of physical, mental and social wellbeing.
The Social Model looks at community infrastructure and how ill-health can be prevented, by creating a society of people that have good health. This is done by looking at the broader determinants on a person’s life. It will take away a patient’s choice to be treated in a way they’re comfortable with, such as being able to choose medication or receiving more natural treatment.
