There is sufficient evidence that some Australian Indigenous communities face major problems associated with the misuse of alcohol and other drugs.

There has been some improvement in a number of social determinants, but Indigenous Australians continue to be disadvantaged compared with non-Indigenous Australians. Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders have less access to essential health services than other Australians. Too often they don’t get the health care they need, when and where they need it.
Overcrowded and poor quality housing in many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, and limited access to fresh and healthy food, are also major contributors to health inequality.
Addressing the social determinants of health, is the best way to improve the health of individuals.
