I chose the paragraph at the beginning of the article that defines me as a passive consumer. I agree with Mr. Berry, like most eaters I am aware that what I eat are agricultural products and I am not an active participant in agriculture. Instead, I am a passive consumer because I do not know anything about what I eat, where the food comes from or how the food is produced. I pay for what I want to eat and do not question the price, the quality or the nutritional value. In addition, Mr. Berry’s passages about the urban shopper and the industrial eater relate and confirm my status of a passive consumer since I do not know anything about the food until I see it in the grocery store.

The way I buy and eat food, as a passive consumer, ignoring the cost, quality and nutritional value is not how I define eating responsibly. I define eating responsibly when a person questions the quality of what one eats. For example, is the food fresh, when was it processed, what has been added to it? Berry’s conclusion on how most eaters have become dependent of the food industry. I am myself a consumer, uncritical and dependent of the fast food industry. To meet Mr. Berry’s definition of eating responsibly, I am willing to start shopping at the local farmers’ market off Scenic Drive because I want to learn to appreciate the food our farmers produce and prepare my food. My goal is to become an active consumer of the food, less dependent on pre-cooked food thus choosing to prepare and eat agriculture or nature products over industry food.
