The authors of the four memoirs overcame their childhood obstacles by having support and help from family. Gary Soto had support and help from his family when he tries to find a job. Laurence Yep had support and help from his family when Laurence thought he was a disappointment. Barack Obama had support and help from his family when he had no friends. Julia Alvarez had support and help from her family when she had to leave her home.…
Personal Response to Texts How do these texts suggest about the role adversity plays in shaping an individual’s identity? If a person has faced an adversity in their life, there is always something important about it which creates the person’s character or breaks it. Almost everyone who have faced adversity in their life would agree that a life with adversity is more appreciated than a life of privilege, and that is because you learn from your adversities.…
I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…
Throughout one’s life, it is impossible to avoid hardship. The one thing that brings us together as people is that however easy or difficult someone’s life may be, they will all experience some level of difficulty or discomfort throughout their lives. It does not matter the magnitude of how someone will experience adversity, the important thing is everyone goes through it. While this knowledge can unite us, it may also separate us in the exact same manner. What separates us from adversity is exactly how we choose to respond to it.…
“When you face difficult times, know that challenges are not sent to destroy you. They are sent to promote, increase and strengthen you.” Every day, each individual faces both obstacles and conflicts in every aspect of life. How individuals deal with these events influences who they become and their identities. How others see people handle their obstacles and conflicts impacts their own identities and question their morals.…
In the words of James Baldwin, “An identity would seem to be arrived at by the way in which a person faces and uses his experience”. What Baldwin is discussing is the idea of adversity being the core of which identity develops. Struggle shapes individuals. Without hardship, every individual would be completely synonymous with each other. Each individual develops their identity through adversity in unique ways.…
Growing up in a large, farming family has given me a myriad of assets that have gotten me to where I am today. Determination, one of those assets, stems from the many obstacles I have faced as a first-generation, low-income, LGBTQ, woman faced with mental illness. Though all the factors were and are against me, I have become the first in my family to go to college. This determination has followed me into the classroom. I strive for good academic standing and understand my classes are not just homework to be done, but as a source of knowledge that I will need in my future career.…
All humans; every race, every culture, and every background--all have a story to tell. It doesn't matter what social class, or what part of a country they are from, every single individual goes through difficulties. A person’s response to that particular challenge is what really matters. Trials can either have a positive or negative impact. If they can stand up to the trial, and pass the test, they develop a sense of grit.…
Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what lessons did you learn? Failure is not unusual but having the courage to get back up and fight for what I believe in is indeed unusual. Much earlier in my studies, I have surmounted tremendous hardship which caused me to drop out of college. I have migrated to America in the early 2000s with my family seeking a better life because my country did not have much to offer.…
Every person has a story; an extensive background that is as unique to you as a finger print. A person may have a nonstop, busy life, or another may have a slower, simplified life. Many things can influence an individual’s choices and decisions, but nothing is as influential to defining someone’s character as the landscape that surrounds them. Whether or not a person decides to closely abide by way of life that they are exposed to their whole life, every decision that a person makes is in some way connected where they grow up. A person’s personality may have the potential to influence someone’s individuality, but it is the landscape of where you are from and the events that occur there that ultimately shape your character.…
There may be personal information that you want considered as part of your admissions application. Write an essay describing that information. You might include exceptional hardships, challenges, or opportunities that have shaped or impacted your abilities or academic credentials, personal responsibilities, exceptional achievements or talents, educational goals, or ways in which you might contribute to an institution committed to creating a diverse learning environment. Throughout my education I’ve had to face various difficult hardships which is a constant reminder of how hard I need to work to succeed.…
There are many headline events that changed my life in positive and negative ways. Some of them were good and some of them were bad. We live in a world where even the smallest things can have a humungous impact on our lives. There have been times that made me feel incredibly vulnerable and there were times that I was not sure if I would make it out alive. Even though I am still breathing, sometimes I do not see how.…
The last few years of my life have been challenging and the challenges I have overcome have taught me how to look at obtacles in a differnet way. When I thounk about my challenges in the past few years, my mind instantly goes back to my grandma passing away last summer. This is something I am still struggling with; my grandma was more than a grandma, she was one of my best friends and she was always pushing me to be my best. Last school year I was struggling, I had very little motivation and my grades were lower than they had ever been. I knew that I had to change something, at this point in time my grandma had been gone for no more than 2 months.…
Others may view the obstacles I had placed in my way as setbacks, people may think because of growing up with a single parent I’m not capable of giving my full potential, but it’s the complete opposite. I view it as a blessing because of this I learned to value my education, I knew what it felt like to have to work in a factory and get minimal wage which was little to no money. I saw my mother stretching the very small income for rent, bills, food, and our needs. Growing up just us two alone in this huge world has made me the hard working independent woman I am today, I don’t need to rely on anyone to survive, I experienced poverty from such a young age that I was determined to give it my all in school to avoid the hardships my mother had to…
Most obstacles are extremely hard and challenging. But by overcoming them, you’ll know why they are important. The importance of overcoming obstacles in life is to make you braver, stronger, and wiser. Everyone has their own obstacles to overcome, and some are illustrated by my own experience of learning how to ride a bike, John Green’s experience of going against his mental illness, and Thor’s experience of…
