• The process beginning before a woman undergoes cancer treatment when a fertility specialist surgically removes the patient’s ovary.
• Laboratory professionals cut the ovarian tissue to create thin grafts of ovarian tissue, which are then treated with a cryoprotective agent to prevent ice crystal formation.
• The laboratory places each graft in a small vial and then into canisters, which will they then place in a liquid nitrogen chamber.
• Using a careful slow freezing process, the temperature in the chamber drops to 220 degree Fahrenheit. The ovarian tissue grafts can safely remained frozen until the woman is ready to use them, at which point the fertility specialist uses robotic surgery to perform an ovarian transplant.
