Outstanding Women In Mechanical Engineering Summary

Everyone was told as a kid to chase their dreams and never give up on them. What if a gender bias caused you to give up on your dream and settle for a job you would hate doing everyday? The article I am going to analyze today is “Outstanding women in mechanical engineering” written by Hoh, Yin Kiong. This article concerns how many women stray from engineering and science based jobs because of people’s perception of engineers and scientists. It also gives an amazing example of a very successful woman engineer and her accomplishments throughout her career. Hoh, Yin Kiong talks about in the article that the exposure to female mechanical engineers would push more young women towards this career path. This article was convincing in some ways but it lacked certain aspects that could’ve made the essay outstanding and very clear.
The title is sufficient to the article but is misleading in the sense that it leads people to believe there are multiple examples of outstanding women engineers in the article. Throughout the article there is mainly one example of a woman engineer and all of her accomplishments throughout her career. The title of this article should have been more along the lines of gender bias in engineering and science. This would’ve given people a better idea to what the article is about. The opening

The author does believe that there is gender bias for engineers and scientists but she backs up this information with statistics and facts. In the article “Outstanding women in mechanical engineering” Yin says that women make up 46.1% of the general workforce as of 2000 but only make up 25.4% of the science and engineering workforce. This percentage could stray women from working in this field because it is made up of mostly men. The authors opinion on this article actually helped the article because she had evidence and wasn’t just saying it because of her
