This issue has been a big problem in our society for a long time because of the fields competitive nature. The difficulties women face in the STEM field corresponds with how the world looks at the gender inequalities and structures and how they would fit in the social work. So my question is, why are women getting paid less than men in the STEM field and how are they treated?
Although it may not feel like women are being discriminated, we surround ourselves with the media, which controls our perception of others and our day to day thoughts. Because of this issue women have been told by the media and our society how girls are not expected to be good at math or not smart enough. Women are not being encouraged or recognized enough, it leaves women feeling insecure causing them to doubt themselves as they pursue their career in the STEM field. I once experienced this insecuring when I told my calculus teacher I wanted to become a doctor for cancer kids and he told me he didn't see me as a doctor he saw me as a manager at Macy’s. This leads to the many reasons why women don't finish their career in the STEM field because of the lack of respect and encouragement. This proves the idea of women not feeling confident enough to speak their opinion because of the judgment they will get. According to Fuselier-Thompson, Diane Rowman, and Ezella McPherson, they claimed how: “The unwelcoming environment often starts in the classroom with young girls and continues as they become women and decided to major in the STEM fields. There are a number of factors, such as a lack of support, the attitude of professors, discrimination, poor communication, a lack of respect, stereotypes, and negative interactions with peers that contribute to the low number of women in STEM”. This explains why women usually decided to not keep going in the major of STEM fields and have a lower rate than me. I also interviewed Doctor Coraline Kay, and Ob-Gyn, she said that it was very challenging for her because since she is a woman, she had to question her own protories like having to put the idea of building a family aside and going out with her friends in order for her to pursue the career she had wanted.
