Osteoporosis Osteoporosis is a bone disease that affects the bone mass making bone become weak and brittle. This disease does affects a large majority of the population. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation “a total of 54 million U.S adults age 50 and older are affected by osteoporosis.” There are many risk factors that are tied into this disease which will later be discussed. With knowledge of this topic maybe research will help prevent some of the risk that go with osteoporosis or help find treatment. To understand what osteoporosis is and how it works there many things to break down. Looking over the history, who this disease effects, why it effects the bones, testing for osteoporosis, finding correct treatment, and the side effects that could come alone with the treatment, could help for a better understanding of this disease.
The disease has been scientifically proven to affect people over the age of fifty. The majority are women who suffer from osteoporosis. USA Today also says” the number of women with osteoporosis and low bone mass is projected to increase by almost 40 percent over the next 20 years. Many women with osteoporosis and low bone mass are undiagnosed and untreated, leaving them at risk for fractures.” On page six is a chart that shows the percentages from USA today of how much it will increase within the next twenty years because of the lack of knowledge of how to prevent it.
