Monge & Poole (2008) explored what can easily be seen as an evolutionary viewpoint on organizational communication and organizational discourse. They take into consideration how ecological approaches allows one to integrate variation, selection, and retention within communication studies. Ecological changes within organizational forms to different organizational populations are also included within this archetype. Organizational discourse embodies intertextuality and reflexivity. Some of the other topics included are network theory, community dynamics, and inter-organizational communication.

Subjects from three organizations read background information, listened to two audiotaped situations containing multiple ethical issues related to organizational communication, responded to focus group interview questions, and partook in some questionnaires. The interviews were taped, transcribed, and analyzed using cognitive mapping techniques. There were some discrepancies in levels of ethical sensitivity, a hierarchical regression model established that the difference was more than likely related to the alterations in level of education in each organization. It became clear that the Organizational membership aspect had some sort an effect on particular facets of the situations that participants noticed
