The artwork I chose is, The Scream by Edvard Munch, which was created in 1893. This artwork has been described, as a “Mona Lisa for our time.” The composition of The Scream is an oil painting on cardboard. Furthermore, the style of this painting is Expressionism. To emphasize, Edvard Munch used lines, and colors to depict human emotions.…
Fahrenheit 451 is a fascinating story about a man named Guy Montag who works as a fireman. Unlike our society today, firemen do not put out fires, they start them. And the reason they start fires is to burn books, which have been outlawed and banned. The people in society do not miss book as many people’s lives revolve around the parlour walls, which have TV’s covering the entire surface. Even Montag’s wife is more focused on the parlour walls than on her own husband.…
Do you really know what is in the meat that we eat? Eric Schlosser has written a book on the process of meat packing plants that begs the question (Fast Food Nation). His work bears a remarkable similarity to Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle written almost one hundred years ago. Schlosser wrote his book from a different approach but contains shocking information of how our meat is still processed today.…
Firstly, the story’s plot moved along naturally without any confusions or hindrances. Every action or thought was conscientiously supported by a cause or a reason, which aided in making the story flow smoothly. Furthermore, the characters’ traits were remarkably well developed. Each character had a distinctive and unique characteristic, which no other character had. Moreover, each of their personalities stayed firm throughout the story, not exhibiting any behavior that seemed out of their original character or impression.…
Fahrenheit 451 is a futuristic novel about a technologically advanced dystopian society, written by Ray Bradbury in 1953. Bradbury depicts a society that is completely content with the suppression of alternative knowledge and learning. The novel reveals that nobody has meaningful conversations, reads books, or explores nature. Instead they are filled with “noise” from televisions that are as large as house walls, radio broadcasts through “seashell” earbuds, or repetitive commercials on subways. Speed limits are so fast, billboards have been stretched out two-hundred feet long, in order to see the advertisement.…
Fahrenheit 451 is a dystopian novel by American writer Ray Bradbury, published in 1953. It is regarded as one of his best works. The novel presents a future American society where books are outlawed and "firemen" burn any that are found. This society portrays the people to be very selfish and self centered, hindered by the constant technology around them. Bradbury predicted many things to occur in the future, not everything was correct but there was some points where he hit the nail on the head.…
Books and thinking and talking, OH MY! Reading can take you to a new world. Reading can benefit you in many different ways. Not only does it make you more knowledgeable and widens your vocabulary, but reading makes you think. Is reading always the answer?…
I liked We Real Cool as well. The link to the poem provided in the assignment folder contained a recording of a reading by Brooks and before she reads, she speaks about the observations of young men at a pool hall that inspired the poem. I agree with your impression that the young men are filled with bravado, and yet face an uncertain future. I feel the poem holds true today as well…
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair depicts the horrors and hardships faced by immigrants and the working class during the industrial revolution. Sinclair focuses on the working conditions of employees of a meat factory. These struggles with working conditions and disease are considered quite inhumane by modern standards. The new spike in demand for goods across America during the industrial revolution created factories, which dehumanised workers in an effort to increase profits.…
Upton Sinclair was an American writer who was well known for his muckraking novel The Jungle which was written in 1906. In this book Sinclair exposes the horrible conditions in the meat packing industries where workers get burned by chemicals or lose a finger, this novel helped cause the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. He also wrote a book in 1919 which was another muckraking exposé on yellow journalism in America which was the government’s ability to control what gets published and not publish the writers who are exploiting, exaggerating or distorting the news…
Throughout the Harlem Renaissance time period, many black Americans struggled to make ends meet and live a fulfilling life. Most black Americans were poor and unhappy, while few had the luxury of working and living among white Americans – often rejecting their identity as a black person. In addition, many poor black Americans hid their frustration and/or depression by appearing to be satisfied through smiles and singing. In Zora Neal Hurston’s “Sweat,” Delia Jones hides her frustration about her unfaithful husband, Sykes, and the hard work she must do with smiles, songs, and an overall contempt tone – even when presently angry. Hurston discusses the advances about blackness and the African American culture by presenting a black woman who has…
It is clear in Murakami’s After Dark that in Japan’s demanding work environment and conservative culture, transgression occurs in the late hours of the night. After Takahashi asks Mari out on a date, Mari claims that she has a dark personality that would not make them compatible, and Takahashi responds: “It's not as if our lives are simply divided into light and dark. There's a shadowy middle ground. Recognizing and understanding the shadows is what a healthy intelligence does. And to acquire a healthy intelligence takes a certain amount of time and effort” (Murakami 226).…
In Franz Kafka’s short story, Before the Law, there is a conflict between the doorkeeper and the man. The man wants to get to the Law, however, the doorkeeper denies him access at the moment, but insists the man ignores his veto and goes in anyway. The doorkeeper does warn the man, however that there are more doorkeepers at every hall and they get harder to pass every time. The man decides not to pass and just wait till the doorkeeper allows him to go to the Law.…
After viewing the short film “Our time is up” by Rob Pearlstein, I was able to place the five components of the plot structure diagram as presented in theatre class. The five plot structure is, exposition, inciting event, raising event, climax, and falling action. The exposition is the beginning of the plot, it sets the foundational background of the main character or the story. At the opening of the story, you see a time clock set, an immaculate environment where everything is not just clean but ordered.…
Our imagination is the greatest power that we can have. It will lead us to see the world differently, and will make you believe to the impossible. If you do not believe with yourself, you will live a life full of regrets. Everything is inside your head. If you believe hard enough, there is a possibility that it will become a reality.…
