After viewing the short film “Our time is up” by Rob Pearlstein, I was able to place the five components of the plot structure diagram as presented in theatre class. The five plot structure is, exposition, inciting event, raising event, climax, and falling action.
The exposition is the beginning of the plot, it sets the foundational background of the main character or the story. The screen shot of the perfect lining monotone suits gives an insight into the psyche of the main character.
My observation is that the protagonist is a perfectionist with overwhelming self-control. He also appears to be boring with a lackluster

The patient did not have a clue of reality and the therapist did not care, he was going through the motions. He could have been emotionally indifferent or stringing them alone to keep up his patient intake. This was evident when the patient asked him how long with the therapy take because two years had already passed; the reply was all in due time with an ominous tone. When the therapist receives the news of his impending death, this marked a turn of events that change the whole dynamic of the …show more content…
Here you see the conflict reaching the apex and the protagonist now has to come to some resolve within himself and his patient. This is the point where the audience is hanging on the suspense as to what will the therapist do.
What did he do, he let go his pinned up sentiments that he was holding on to; with himself and his patients. Facing the truth of his own demise, he understood life was too short for such insignificant phobias that was holding them back from living life. The turning point was that he held the key the entire time to help them. Now that time for him was running out and his life was dwindling; he made a conscious effort to really help his patients.
Which brings us to the falling action, this is the downward slope of the story which conveys the events into a neat composite; this allows the audience to come to their own conclusions. At this time the story should bring one to the synopsis of the story’s outcome. It also will release the tension and bring each character to a catharsis or a release to move in a new

The novel, Schopenhauer Cure, by Irvin Yalom appears to be a supplement of his book, The Theory and Practice of Group Therapy. In the novel, Julius Hertzfield, the therapist, discovered he was diagnosed with melanoma. According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, “ Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer, these cancerous growths develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations (genetic defects) that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. If melanoma is recognized and treated early, it is almost always curable, but if it is not, the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, where it becomes hard to treat…

This play pulls at emotional, moral conflict, revenge, sacrifice and choices for the greater good. The story also shows that things are not always what they appear to be at first glance. Who are you? This simplistic question can conjure a variety of answers depending on the person responding. The most intriguing and successful replies arise from those who respond with the ideal criteria described by Ramsdell (2010) in “Storytelling, Narration, and the ‘Who I Am’ Story”. Based on Ramsdell’s criteria for the “Who I Am” story, it is evident that writers employ similar aspects into their writing, as seen in Sedaris’ (2000) “ Me Talk Pretty One Day”, and in my personal literacy narrative, “The Weight of Clinkscale: A Learning Experience”.…
