Officer Mustafi’s presentation talked about some of the other reasons as to why someone may choose to use drugs. He mentioned that under lying issues such as undiagnosed mental illnesses and various physical pains can cause people to turn to substance abuse as a way to cope with those issues. This in turn can make their underlying issues worse however because of some of the side effects associated with substance use. Going with the idea that people perceive the number of students involved with drugs and alcohol at our school to be much higher, peer pressure becomes a viable culprit to the reasons why people turn to these substances. With the knowledge that apparently 50% of the school goes to parties and uses drugs and alcohol, students may choose to go to parties themselves where they might find someone who uses drugs and alcohol regularly, who may attempt to peer pressure the student into using drugs themselves. This became true because of the fact that with so much access to these pills people began to abuse them. This ready availability sparked an opioid addiction which resulted in people abusing opioids by not following their doctor's directions, faking pain to attain more pills, and stealing or buying the pills second hand. As can be seen, the availability of opioid pills sparked a large increase in addiction, and a raise in illegal actions taken by people to get these drugs. These pills caused people to socially withdraw from their family and friends, become tolerant of the pills and therefore require a dosage increase, use after their medical condition has improved, have blackouts and become forgetful, and experience changes to their daily routines. This ultimately caused new laws and regulations to be implemented in order to stop high amounts of drug abuse.
