Poverty is defined as a person or people having little to no money. Poverty is a serious issue because without a sufficient amount of money, people are not able to accomplish necessities like such as paying rent, mortgage, utilities, food, and medical care. Without money, a person cannot pay rent, so now he lives in the street as resorts to being classified as a homeless person. Without money, a person cannot buy food , so now he’s suffering from starvation and malnourishment. If the homeless person had a serious life-threatening disease, he wouldn’t be able to help himself because he cannot afford to pay the medical bills. The only thing worse than a person in poverty is a family in poverty because imagine how heart-breaking and disappoint thing parents feel that they cannot even do the basic of feeding their child. According to RESULTS, a program passionately dedicated to end poverty, nearly 46.5 million people are below the poverty line. While poverty is not near as widespread as obesity, which 30% of the population are, and poverty with only 15% of the population. Reports from the office of the APSE, or the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, show that one person in the household would have the salary of $11,700, 2 people would have $15,930, 3 people would have $20,090 and so forth. These numbers clearly show that a person makes no more than $12,000, which is very difficult to live on. An example of an American living in poverty is Mary Lee, a woman of 49 years, living in Bellingham, Washington. She went to college, started a business, and lived in the middle class. Everything was fine until her business encountered problems.This caused her to lose her business, her source of income. With no business and no source of income, she is homeless and is only surviving life by eating an exorbitant amount of cheap and unhealthy Top Ramen.
