The Australian government has regardless of which political party, over many years shown that its preference is to allow large multinational companies including Google, Apple and Amazon to avoid their tax obligations while doing very little to help those in need with any form of tax relief. In 2013-14 financial year one third of the top 500 companies in Australia paid no tax.

It can be said that when a company wants to ensure its political obstacles are negated it can support a political party, but sometimes the need for companies to hedge their bets shows the folly of this belief. In the 2014-15 financial year, Australian Hotels and Hospitality Association Inc donated $171,000 to the Labor party in Victoria and $157,000 to the Liberal party in Victoria. Clearly the political donation system is an issue in Australia when a company wants to effect change all they have to do is make sure the political party that gains power can attribute some of its success to the company’s donation.
