The Great Depression was a hard time for Americans. At first the country was rebuilding from WW1 and the economy was doing fine but when the stock market crashed the recession deepened forming the Great Depression. There was a major drought, so farmers couldn’t produce many crops and when they could they didn’t get much for their produce because people couldn’t pay much. During this time many people were losing their jobs, had little money, and stock and prices for basic items (water, food, paper, clothes) were higher than what could be afforded. When FDR was elected President Hoover attempts are rectifying the depression had not succeeded. The economy was bad but the people were suffering worse there was little water and heating for homes. He also came up with the 3 R’s to help fix the economy (Relief, Recovery, and Reform). By using this approach, he started programs to help those living in poverty, which led to a small recovery of living conditions. For recovery he started finding ways for business to make profit again. Reform was the biggest R that was essential to the rebuilding of the economy and a way out of the Depression. He changed how the economy was formatted while keeping capitalism. During this time there wasn’t a huge gap in the economic classes. Many other great fixes came for FDR’s presidency such as changing how the NRA operated (to provide more jobs to people while still making a profits), the AAA (so movements like the Populist wouldn’t happen again and so that farmers could make more money than before.
