Genetically Modified Organisms: Effects It Can Have on Humans and Nature

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is known to be used by the food industry. It changes the genetic makeup of DNA. It is defined as organisms whose DNA has been altered in a natural way. It helps protect and speed up the growing process of vegetation or animals. It has been causing commotion in the last couple of years. Many people are a concerned with GMOs because there have not been many studies towards it. Consumption of GMO throughout your whole life along with processed foods can alter your health and even increase your chance of cancer and diseases. We really do not know what long-term effect it can have to our bodies. If it can increase our chances of getting cancer, dementia, or other health problems. There was …show more content…
It has shown a link to GMOs and our health. In many countries, it is forbidden to use it in their foods. Not only it can affect their health, it can be toxic to the environment and animals.
GMO products allow plants to be resistant towards insects, viruses, and herbicides. This product causes them to be tolerant, but where there is a positive, there is a negative. The product such as Roundup is used on GMO can cause environmental challenges. GMO by products and Roundup can deplete the soil from nutrients and vital minerals (Glass). Roundup has a chemical called Glyphosate, which is not biodegradable. Meaning it does not break down. It accumulates in the soil throughout time (Suurkula).
