Arguments Against Gmo

As a student in the College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences at Ohio State, agriculture related issues are particularly of interest to me. A topic that comes up often in conversations in both my classes and in society is genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. It's been widely debated about whether or not these scientific advances are harmful to humans and the environment. People need to learn the actual facts about GMOs before making the decision to support or oppose them. In the article from the Huffington Post, the author makes some striking claims against GMOs. She describes the process of making GMOs as a scientist using extreme methods to force DNA from one species into another. She fears that we are altering what makes species unique to other species and that in turn could cause them to be unstable and a threat. Additionally, she writes that nothing is being done to make sure that we don't negatively affect the genetics of everything else in the natural world. The FDA and the World Health Organization both agree that there is no proof that GMO foods are a greater risk to humans than normal, unmodified foods (Chrispeels, 2014). There is strong scientific evidence that these foods are safe. A recent animal feeding study showed no difference in nutrition between GM or non-GM foods. It can even be said that no documented negative health effects have been linked to genetic engineering in human populations (Novella, 2014). There also has been no scientific evidence that this technology would cause super weeds to be created (Boyer, 2004). In addition, there are few studies that have been done that have proved adverse effects, the problem is that these papers are the ones that get the most attention from the public and media even if the information is later proved to be false (Chrispeels,
