The Pros And Cons Of Gmo's

Ever since Monsanto introduced its Roundup Ready seed in the 1990’s there has been a big debate about whether they are safe and do the advantages of the outweigh the disadvantages. It has been proven in over 2000 independent studies that GMO’s are in fact safe according to the
“Genetic Literacy Project”. It is evident by now that not only are the GM crops safe, but save labor, money, and produce higher quality higher yielding plants. The accusation that genetic modifying has not been around long enough for us to fully understand it is ridiculous. Biotechnology is not new, in fact, it has been around since 1919 when the word biotechnology was first used by a Hungarian scientist. However, the first hybrid corn crop was not introduced commercially

For years, there has been a serious debate regarding whether genetically modified foods are safe for consumption. Due to this seemingly everlasting controversy came the rise of pro-GMO and anti-GMO groups. To truly understand the severity of the issue, it is important to first understand what exactly a “GMO” is and why it supposedly poses a threat to civilization. A Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is an organism in which “genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially placed into another plant or animal” (Institute for Responsible Technology). Doing so allows for a crop to grow at a higher yield and lower cost.…

GMOs themselves also date back much further than the late 20th century, with products like the famed “Winter Wheat” mentioned previously being planted more than half a century earlier. Though not a modification in the modern sense, strains like the weather resistant grain were created through a process with an identical end result known as selective breeding. Selective breeding is the cross pollination of plants with more desirable traits to create improved versions of those plants. It was practiced unintentionally thousands of years ago, due to a lack of understanding of the genome. However, it was soon understood in practice that traits were somehow passed down through generations of crops.…

Genetically Modified Organisms, most commonly known as GMOs, have been an extremely controversial subject since their rise in popularity among commercial farmers. These GMOs have created various social, economic, and cultural issues within the US and Europe. As defined by the Non GMO Project, a GMO “is a plant, animal, microorganism or other organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a laboratory using genetic engineering or transgenic technology. This creates combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and virus genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional cross breeding methods (Non GMO Project, 2).” Farmers have been modifying crops for a long time to make their produce more satisfactory, however, when the switch occured…

First off a GMO is a living organism that has been modified in a laboratory, this is a simple definition of course. The fact that many countries have outlawed them makes me wonder about the safety of messing with Mother Nature. I’ve read some reports that say that GMOs have now been linked to causing kidney and liver damage as well (Photo attached from study). In a 2012 study a research team headed by Gilles-Eric Seralini at France’s Caen University, and they showed a link. The interesting thing to note is that the study had four months of reviews before it was published.…

When it comes to the topic of GMOs, most of us readily agree that it’s a debatable topic. Where this agreement usually ends, however, is on the question of whether GMOs are safe to eat. Those unfamiliar with this school of thought may be interested to know that it basically boils down to how we look at GMOs. Genetically modified organisms also known as GMOs have been an area of hot debate over the last few years. In this article we will explore the arguments for and against GMOs and at the end dispel the fear-mongering and show that humanity has been modified organisms since the beginning of recorded human history; we are just much better and faster at it now than in the past 1,000s years. The goal in GMOs is to modify organisms (generally food stock such as livestock and extensive agriculture, plants), at the genetic level, to obtain better quality offspring. Companies such as Monsanto and other agriculture, industrial giants aim to create plants that taste better, have better nutrition qualities, are resistant to drought, pest, and other environmental…
