In this generation the words “gay” and “faggot” are used to make people feel bad about themselves and it is made to be an insult. With these words floating around…..
“A world so hateful some would rather die than be who they are”
Present generations often believe that people, who may differ from us in one way or another, are lower or less deserving than ourselves. As the song goes on, Macklemore uses his lyrics to show that there is no reason to hide who you are and that everyone is similar. The world is evolving around us, and people are beginning to realize that everyone is equivalent, no matter what religion, race, sexuality and gender. The song is telling the audience that they need to stand up for themselves, to show the world who they are and why they deserve to be treated equally. It is not possible for an individual to change their sexuality without changing their beliefs, so why should a person change when they can be the best that they can be?
