Looking at history, the National Restaurant Association was known as the Kanas City Restaurant Association. Egg brokers in 1917 demanded 65 cents per dozen of eggs. The organization organized a boycott, and egg prices dropped to 32 cents. In that moment in time, it started a national movement. Kansas City restaurateurs propelled a national organization on March 13th 1919 in Kansas City, MO. They would have their first meeting and is known today as the National Restaurant Association. At this time the inexperienced organization would represent an industry of 43,000 restaurants. With the NRA growing they decided to move the National Headquarters Chicago in 1927 and then again in 2012 to Washington, DC ("NRA History," n.d.). One of the safety programs provided by the NRA is ServSafe, a food safety training program. In 1999 they hit one million and by 2012 reached 5 million professionals trained by this program. In 2019 the NRA will be 100 years old. One in ten working Americans today are employed by the restaurant industry with 14.7 million employees ("NRA History," n.d.).
The NRA is now supporting well over 500,000 restaurant businesses and is the largest foodservice trade association worldwide. The NRA works every day to inspire all restaurant owners and operators to accomplish more than they could ever dream of. Representing and Advocating for those in the foodservice industry, buy taking on obstacles for its members. Providing tools and systems that will help members of all sizes get significantly better operating results. Offering networking, education, and research resources. Which are only possible because of our vast, and active, membership base ("About Us," n.d.). The NRA is very proactive by keeping the industry moving forward and find answers to tough questions. Helping members save time, money and headaches by taking on what matters most for their success and growth. From protecting their interests, practices that are being shared, or simple by helping them get in front of new emerging trends. Making the NRA the go-to source that helps our members run their businesses better. Rather than standing alone, the NRA believes that there is strength in numbers. Attending the 32nd Public Affairs Conference. While there they met with their Senators and Representatives. Discussing policy issues affecting todays industry. The ultimate goal the restauranteurs was they wanted to inform lawmakers how their decisions impact their communities and restaurants back home. Issues like improving the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), having the employer mandate of the Affordable Care Act repealed, and having the 15 year restaurant deprecation default back to 39 years, due to a drafting error in 2017 ("Restaurateurs, Congress talk policy on Capitol Hill," 2018).
