There are many groups that are specific to a topic, yet not all of the groups will be considered as a discourse community. Discourse, according to Dictionary.com, means “communication of thought by words; talk; conversation,” and community is a social group that has members. John Swales, a professor of linguistics and best known for his genre analysis is the creator behind the six characteristics that determine if a community is a discourse community. A discourse community follows Swales’ six characteristics: share common goals, has a form of communication, a form of feedback, genres, a specific lexis, and has a level of expertise all within the group (Swales 25). In the Steak n’ Shake community, a fairly new restaurant chain to the University of Memphis campus, the goal is to work together to “serve patrons the highest quality burgers and shakes along with extending them great service at the lowest possible price.” Shake n’ Shake is a classic American brand restaurant that has partnered with the university’s Aramark to open and present itself to the campus population. Aramark is in charge of the University of Memphis food services, and the employees under the company. The restaurant serves breakfast, burgers, shakes, chicken, and foot long hotdogs to its customers. On opening day Steak n’ Shake was an enormous deal within the University of Memphis, and was the popular place for food the opening week, with sponsored give away to continue the hype throughout the week by corporate bosses. Upon researching the community, the objective was to find exactly how the community runs to accomplish its goals. Most of the conflicts come from the closing period of the day, and how the community functions towards the end of the shift. There is never a plan as to how the establishment should properly close down at a decent time. The genres do not give a proper way for Steak n’ Shake to close down the business in a decent amount of time. The genres provide information on how certain items are cooked, how the employee uniform should be, and the rules and steps for a trainer. Even though the genres do not provide enough information as to how the community should function at the end of the day, there is a great amount of information on the products sold and employee policies.
