National EHR Mandate
An electronic health record (EHR) defines as the permissible patient record created in hospitals that serve as the data source for all health records. It is an electronic version of a paper chart that includes the patient’s medical history, maintained by the provider over time, and may include all of the key administrative clinical data relevant to that persons care. Information that is readily available includes information such as demographics, progress notes, allergies, medications, vital signs, past medical history, immunizations, laboratory data, & radiology reports. Current Facility’s Plan I am currently a professional staff nurse at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Northwest. At UPMC, the electronic health record, called eRecord, has been implemented in various phases throughout the 19 hospitals of the system and has thus far created almost 1.3 million unique patient records. UPMC Northwest launched their version of EHR in April of 2011. Among the eRecord applications are: computerized physician order entry, a patient portal, emergency room automation, paperless reporting and structured clinical documentation Dr. Martich said. “Positive results have included a reduction in medical errors that cause harm, improved patient and physician satisfaction, improved regulatory compliance, reduced pharmacy costs, less dropped hand-offs of patients from clinician to clinician and time savings for physicians and patients”(UPMC, 2010).
Analysis of Facility’s Plan UPMC knows firsthand how costly and trying it can be to implement EHR. They have spent more than 8 years and over $1 billion on informational technology systems to implement electron health records (Greenemeier, L., 2009). UPMC utilizes an eRecord application called Powerchart. Powerchart provides clinical patient information in an integrated manner, similar to a paper chart, without the disadvantages.
