A method that was a main technique was narration. The use of narration was used many times through out the film from the beginning to the very end. The narration was done by the character Red, Red's narration of his stories and personal thoughts of Andy really helped develop Andy's character through out the film.

When Andy was sitting on the bus in his way to the prison Red narration tells us that Andy was on his to prison because he killed his wife and her secret lover, and also tells the audience that he was a fancy banker. This information was only explained by Red, so without this narration of Red the audience would've been left with a big hole of who Andy is and why he is in prison. Another example of this is when Andy brakes out of prison, the audience was left with a suspense as it looked like Andy was going to commit suicide in prison as he had a rope in his hand before cutting to the next scene, the way he broke out of prison was only shown through Reds flash back and narration of how he got out of prison, of how Andy dig a hole and crawled through a mile of a sewage pipe. Without these narrations of Red there would be big holes of information that needed to be known to the audience, through Red information was handed to the audience and made them know what was going on through out the film. The movie comes a few years after the United States got ‘tough on crime,” which led to massive increases in people entering prison for small crimes, that before wouldn’t have been punished as severely before. Darabont saw how the justice department took advantage of the 13th amendment and saw an opportunity to make a film that portrays an analogous situation to what was happening all across the country in the 90s. The Shawshank Redemption followed one man and depicted the corruption that he faced in prison, but the film is supposed to be a metaphor for the struggles that each individual who was affected by the “tough on crime” era and looking at the time of the release one can connect the two. Because Thomas Keneally’s novel and Steven Spielberg’s film, Schindler’s List is the account of one such individual. In the novel, Thomas Keneally shows Oskar Schindler’s roguish and rebellious personality by describing his manner and appearance with descriptive language, characterization, and dialogue whereas in the movie, Spielberg does this through expositions, point of view shots, and shot reverse shot. Between the two tellings of the same story, there is a common theme in the presentation: attention to detail.…

Stereotypes are present in society, but it may be difficult to discuss and to further change or overcome them. However, humor can be used as a device to allow a serious topic to be more approachable by relying on preposterous situations. Through the use of dark humor in Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, John Callahan breaks these stigmas and illustrates an outrageous view of disability in order to show the irrationality of the stereotype or stigma portrayed. Throughout this work, Callahan directly attacks the stereotypes regarding disability and illustrates the realistic portrayal of disability and offers a solution, through humor, to overcome the societal prejudices.…
