A Month in the Country was written by J. L. Carr. The writer of the book whose name is J. L. Carr has the main character called as Tom Birkin. Tom Birkin was a damaged survivor of the First World War and he was tasked with uncovering the huge wall painting of the church. He went to the place that was called as Oxgodby to be able to earn money even if it was a less amount of money because he needed money to make a new beginning to get rid of the effects of the First World War. The main character seemed as an artist whose wife left him alone. The place he has spent his summer to uncover the painting was a village which was silent and has gravestones around the church. Although it had the same qualities with a novel it was much more than a novel. It might have been an autobiographical novel because it included the experiences of the writer from the fifty years ago when he wrote the novel. The novel had memories from the past time so it may have been the experiences of the writer. The main character Tom Birkin perceived as the writer owing to the style of the writer. J. L. Carr told us a story which seemed very realistic to us. He had used first person narration and the main character of the story who was Tom Birkin represented the writer himself. The novel worked through the past and the present since Tom Birkin always looked backed regretfully. On the other hand, he was working on the wall painting of the church to be able to get rid of his past which caused him to experience bad things in his life and wants to be able to believe that good things may happen in the future. “The anxious time was over; I was in calm water now. The weather, those long warm days, went on in majestic succession right through August… summertime! And summertime in my early twenties! And in love! No better than that…” (Carr,p.70-71). These sentences showed the perception of the writer toward the past and the present. Also, it demonstrated that the writer has a hope about the future with the help of forgetting the memories of the past time. J. L. Carr’s present was influenced by his past since he had felt something about the past. Although the novel had experienced the time between the First World War and the Second World War, the published date of the novel was 1980 which demonstrates that the writer wanted to refer to the time after the First World War since he wanted to re-experience his feelings about that time.
