Teen Suicide: The Leading Cause Of Teenage Suicide

It was a misty Wednesday morning, and it was my turn to drive to school. During that time, my best friend lived about two blocks away from me, so we carpooled to school. Before leaving my house, I would call and notify her what time I would arrive. But that day when I called, her phone directed me straight to voicemail. By then, I was a little puzzled because her phone never goes straight to voicemail. After three attempts, I decided to drive and go inside her house since she never locked her back door. As I walked inside, I noticed that all the lights were off, so I decided to walk upstairs to her room. After checking her room, I assumed that she was in the bathroom. While walking towards the bathroom, I heard quiet crying noises. I immediately became concerned, so I knocked on her bathroom door. She never answered. What causes teenagers to make such a calamitous decision? Unfortunately, depression is a main cause that triggers suicides. Studies shows that, “In teenagers, depression is considered a leading if not the leading cause of teen suicide” ("Teen Suicide Causes and Issues" ). Teenage depression is caused by many unfortunate circumstances they encounter in their lives that makes them feel hopeless and inferior in the world. One cause of depression that leads to suicide is the pressure of performing well academically ("Teen Suicide Causes and Issues"). One tragic suicidal incident occurred in India. A 15 year old girl from India hung herself from a ceiling fan because her parents chastised her for getting low scores on her exam ("Teen Girl Commits Suicide”). The pressure from parents can have a very emotional effect on teenagers. Parents can have a child feeling as if they are not good enough. If parents cause much stress and discouragement on their child, then it would lead to devastating
