Personal Narrative: Learning English As A Second Language

I wish we could go back in time and start all over again. Where now we see, things that we regret. But we don’t have that choice except learn from our mistakes. In elementary and middle school, I can remember that I really couldn’t pay very much attention due to the crazy classmates I had. When it came to reading and writing I struggled so much. I don’t know what it was, maybe I was so slow at understanding? Was it bad to speak another language? I always asked questions to myself. I grew up with parents that did not speak, or understood English. They only knew Spanish. It was hard for me because I was the oldest out of my siblings. They didn’t know. However, my parents couldn’t really help me with my reading and writing. They always tried their best to redirect, when I translated the subject. They gave me back ideas in which I wrote down. My mom knew a bit of English. She always helped me out because she understood more than my dad. My dad knew too, but he was not always there to help because he worked in the evenings. I can remember during my elementary year at Fairfield, teachers gave out bags of books when there was back to school night. However, from those books, when I was little, my mom read them to me. I went to South Side high throughout my four years. High school was way different then middle school and it was a little serious too. I had three English teachers helping me with my writing. I think the others were a waste. When I took my first English class I was in a group called ELL which was English language learners. My counselor thought that this English class would help me because English was my second language. Throughout the year being in the group they would call us down into the cafeteria and we would read passages. Some were interesting to read; others were okay. After reading them, we would have to answer questions about the passage. At the end there was topic given and we would have to write about that

When I was in elementary and middle school I didn't really have a subject preference. I was just okay at every subject and I couldn't find myself interested in anything particular. I didn't feel lost because I had plenty of time to decide what I wanted for myself that would make me happy. After a certain point in my life though, I have always had a preference for English, a preference that I didn't act on until recently. That's not the story that I want to tell. I want to introduce what initially brought me to this interest; a human rights class.…

When I get to my AP Language class I look around the classroom that has a homey feel to it. Curtains drape over the cold foggy windows in royal red, rimmed with gold shimmering colors. A lamp is turned on, creating a soft glow in the room while the warm smell of pumpkin pie is enough to make it hell for a sleep deprived person to stay awake.…

I remember what Pre-K was like. Imagine little Elvia. She 's at St. Edwards Catholic Church and School. She is quiet. Her first language is Spanish and it is what she speaks at home the most. She understands English because it is what her father speaks, but she doesn’t speak it much. She listens to the kids and teachers around her and eventually catches onto the language a little more. She hates the English language! Fast-forward. Now she 's at the end of kindergarten. In order to pass onto first grade she is asked a series of questions. She is stubborn. One of the questions is to count. Clearly, it has to be in English and because of that she does not want to do it." One, two, three, four, cinco, seis siete, ocho", and the counting goes on in Spanish. The teacher informs her mother about what she has done during dismissal. When they get home she sits Elvia down and tells her that whether she likes it or not she had to speak in English or she wouldn’t pass kindergarten. From then on her mother bought her books and Elvia began to read. She had books in English and in Spanish.…

My father read to me every night when I was young but it was always in Spanish. I developed my Spanish vocabulary rapidly and was able to read and write well since my parents were teaching me. At the time, my school only began teaching English until about the third grade. I vividly remember my childhood as being one with books, I always reading even if it was late at night; I always enjoyed a great book. Learning to read is not particularly easy, you can’t just grab a book and learn how to read in the course of a day, learning how to read when English isn’t your first language is far from simple. There are a variety of different factors that have to go into consideration and it wasn’t a piece of cake, I’d always try to pronounce a word in Spanish, or I’d spell English words that were similar to Spanish words incorrectly. I also had to remember that along the process of learning English I also had to keep my Spanish flowing, I had to communicate with both my teachers and parents so that meant that I had to learn two things at once. Reading has shaped me in many ways, I used to be a quiet girl who barely spoke in the classroom, to a translator for a student that didn’t speak English. Although I am still that shy girl who never wants to raise her hand, I know that I am not that same illiterate person with little to offer to my school. What impressed me the most as a child was how teachers and the encouragement from family members…

I believe Literacy is a KEY, which opens mysteries treasures with in Universe. Journey within life becomes more meaningful with the knowledge of literacy. Knowledge is a power, and if there is no KEY than there will be no access to treasures of knowledge. Also life will become meaningless moreover we will not be able to comprehend the meaning of life neither improve our self’s. Surely precious assets along with valuable and significantly important treasures need to be kept in are secure lock places. This is the reason I choose KEY as a metaphor for my literacy journey. Once the doors and treasures start it to open with a KEY, and than one can start the journey that can lead to success and happiness. Learning literacy appropriately not only helps people with their scholastic environment, moreover…

I remember sitting in my first grade classroom with Mrs. Mashburn, she held our attention by standing at the front of the classroom singing this jingle: “This little pronoun, floating around. Takes the place of a little old noun. With a knick knack paddy wack. These are English rules. Isn’t language fun and cool?” To this day I will never forget Shurley English jingles. Even though I can remember the catching little jingles I learned from first grade through seventh grade, I still don’t view my writing skills to be good. After receiving my Path Builder Summery I found my skills to be weaker than I expected.…

Growing up in an Indian family, literacy has always been one of the most important things. The only education my dad ever received was a high school diploma. My mom, on the other hand, was fortunate enough to go to college. Being the oldest child in the family, my parents held high expectations of me. As a famous saying goes, “Always my mother, forever my friend.” My mom taught me almost everything I know. Ranging from how to tie my shoelaces, to how to ride a bike, to how to cook and clean, and much more. I was extremely lucky to not only receive a great education at school, but also have a second educator at home. My mom’s responsible for one very important aspect of my life, which is my literacy. Not only did she teach me how to read and write, she also taught me how to communicate properly.…
