Improved Essays
Being a first generation American is truly a blessing. As a child I wanted my parents to adapt linguistically and culturally to the American culture. I was embarrassed of having parents who had an accent when they spoke. I was also embarrassed to have to translate for my parents when we went to places where the service was only available in English. They would tell me to translate but I was hesitant. I can now say that I am proud to be born in a diverse country where my identity and my background no longer bother me. The morals and life lessons that I inherited from parents complete me.
The image of myself graduating high school fascinates my parents. I know the expectation of my parents, of a good education. My parents migrated to a country with high hopes of their children pursuing the American Dream. I remember the stories mother and father would tell me when they arrived in the

I remember my first day, my teachers were reciting the alphabet over and over again. However the words and pronunciations she spoke were Greek to me. My parents spoke their native language to me in every conversation, making sure I knew not to forget who I am and where I came from. Also, it was because it was the only language they knew how to speak. In my parents speaking Spanish is a requirement. My two nephews that live with my older sister don't speak Spanish well enough to have a conversation with. They only know it to an extent of greetings. My mother has had a hard time having a conversation with them. I believe being bilingual is a godsend. I am glad to be one of the 425 million people in the world to use the romanced language. I have had conversations with many strangers from the United States, Mexico, Paraguay, and Brazil. If I wasn’t able to speak Spanish I would feel as if I had less connection with the world around me. With the courage of my parents , I speak Spanish everyday and it is a part of my

My parent’s American Dream, similar to many other immigrants of the 1990s, was to seek a better life and to get access to more job opportunities. When I interview my dad about his difficult decision of leaving everything behind and move to a foreign country, he told me that during that time, China had a horrible economy and he just simply did not see a future in that kind of environment. When he heard about San Francisco, a land of gold and opportunities, he decided to take a risk and challenge the unknown, all for the chances of having a better future. When he finally stepped onto the rich soil of America, he dreamed about the possibilities of having a family, a better environment for his children, and most importantly about the opportunities…

A moment in when language (Spanish) really changed a lot in my life was when I got into high school and toke my first Spanish class. This changed a lot in my life because taking this class would help me read and write Spanish while also improving how I pronounced words and spoke so that it would become fluent. I have always been an advocate for young children learning other languages, especially Spanish, because I feel that they will have more career opportunities since they will be able to communicate better with everyone. From the time that my daughter was in kindergarten through third grade, every child had Spanish as an Encore class. Unfortunately, when Congress felt that children were not getting enough physical activity, this class was cut from schools while adding an extra physical education class (this is how I got the job that I teach today).…

I never really got a chance to get to know my Aunt Marilena, seeing that she lived in McLean, Virginia and I almost never saw her. I didn’t really think her life was ever that complicated or rough; her husband (my uncle) is a millionaire, so she never has to worry about anything money related, she’s a stay-at-home mom. I just didn’t really think about it until I sat down to talk to her about her college experiences. We were at my grandpa’s house in Columbus, Ohio, she was there to help him move out, sitting at the dining room table. Hands folded on the table, she looked alert and ready to answer my questions.…

When I was a kid what I desired the most was to have a united family.
